About us

The Social Paediatric Centre started operating in spring 1991 as a department of the Heinrich-Meng-Institute in Brühl and has continued to expand ever since. In accordance with the German Social Insurance Code (SGB V § 119), social paediatric centres are a special institutional form of interdisciplinary outpatient medical services.

Diagnosis and Therapy

Our diagnostic examinations are based on a multidimensional approach. We record the patient’s biography and medical history along with performing a comprehensive examination and an analysis of resources. The biography and medical history consists of a comprehensive history of the patient, their family and their circumstances. The examination focuses on all the significant physical and mental aspects required to define a medical condition:

  • Development/intelligence
  • Physical and neurological findings
  • Psychological findings
  • Social circumstances
  • Clarification of the causes

After that we clarify all the underlying conditions under which both patient and family live (analysis of resources). This is of particular significance when planning possible treatments.

Drawing up a Support and Treatment Plan:

Based on the outcome of the examination and analysis of resources, a support and treatment plan is drawn up and agreed with the patient and their family. When designing this plan, we also involve doctors in private practice, therapists and other institutions.
If treatment is indicated, we make plans for this treatment to be carried out either here at the SPZ or at the practice of an external partner. At the start, the nature and purpose, scope and duration of the treatment are explained. It is also important to inform you about the limitations of treatment and what can be achieved with therapy. To begin with, we will agree on:

  • Intensity (frequency) of treatment
  • Therapeutic approach (type of therapy)
  • Duration of therapy
